ORANGE COUNTY PERMITTING REQUIREMENTS

Permitting requirements within our fence installation territory are constantly changing. To understand the current permitting requirements specific for installing a fence, we have included links to the appropriate cities and townships website for your convenience.

ORANGE COUNTY

Orange County does not currently require permits for fences unless specifically stated within an Orange County City or Township.

CARRBORO (TOWN)

The Town of Carrboro does not currently require permits for fences based on existing information. To ensure that your fence is fully compliant, please click here for more information or call 919-918-7336 or visit the Inspections and Permits Division located in Town Hall at 301 West Main Street.

CHAPEL HILL (TOWN)

According to the Town of Chapel Hill website, fences under 6’ in height typically only require a Zoning Compliance Permit Exemption. Fences that are 6’ in height or higher will require a permit. You can contact the Planning Department at 919.968.2728 for additional information. Please note that additional regulations apply for properties within a Historic District, Resource Conservation District and the Jordan Buffer. Zoning Compliance Permit Exemption Form can be found here.

HILLSBOROUGH (TOWN)

The Town of Hillsborough currently requires a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) if your property is located with the historic district to obtain a fence permit. More information can be found here.
